What is the fear of dogs and why do I have it?

The fear of dogs, or Cynophobia to call it by its official name, refers to a condition in which an individual suffers from an intense or extreme anxious fear of dogs, more specifically, being bitten or harmed by a dog. This fear of dogs, more often than not, leads to the sufferer taking extreme measures and methods in order to avoid seeing or being in the presence of a dog.
Even though most Cynophobic adults understand that their fear is irrational and even unreasonable at times, they simply cannot control or manage this fear when a situation arises in which a dog is present. Normally the root cause of cynophobia comes from a previous traumatic experience, normally from childhood. This could have been caused from something physical like an actual dog bite or attack, to a bad memory of loud, angry or an aggressive barking dog.

Anxiety Hypnosis EMDR.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is one of the best ways that The Nexus Team knows of that will help your mind process the bad thoughts and so leaving you feeling more in control. As with most fears and phobias, an individual’s level of fear or anxiety differs from person to person. For some, dogs who seem under control by their owners and on a lead, have little or no effect to them as their stress level remains low and for them to feel in control. However, a dog roaming free may cause a sharp increase in anxiety/fear and panic levels. For other individuals, simply the sound of barking dogs is enough for panic and anxiety to set in.

What are the symptoms of Cynophobia?

The fear of dogs has many of the same symptoms as similar fears or phobias, however sufferers of cynophobia seem to experience more of a frightened or scared effect if the dog appears aggressive or is barking angrily.
In addition to panic and anxiety, you may also experience one or more of the following symptoms upon encountering, or in the presence of a dog;

Increase in heart rate
Sweating
Heightened levels of fear
Shaking Limbs
Nausea
Dizziness
Irrational thoughts
Irrational behaviours

Many suffers of cynophobia experience this phobia but do not seek treatment as they see their fear of dogs as a normal everyday fear and most individuals are never able to overcome this fear alone.

There is a big difference in managing your cynophobia and actually curing it indefinitely. By simply managing your fear of dogs i.e. crossing the road when you see a dog or avoiding the presence of dogs entirely, you are not addressing the deeper lying issues at hand. BACK AWAY FROM THE STRESS!

Stress can build up each time you endure it and this makes you get used to the stress. Until one day you have a breakdown.

Stress is the number one reason people are off work or they have related stress problems.

Here are some key things that you can do to help improve your overall stressful life.

#1 As in the video, remove yourself away from a stressful situation, until your head feels clear and can tattle the problem once more.

#2 Notice that everybody’s threshold of stress is different. If you have a low tolerant towards stress then notice this and keep yourself in check, that means you are in control of your stress level.

#3 If you feel your stress creeping up into the red zone, like the rev counter on a car, then you know it’s time to either breathe deeper or remove yourself from the problem if possible.

If your stress is at its peek, then I would advise you to seek out a therapist who deals with stress, as I do. I can help with hypnosis and NLP to get you not to over react to stressful problems again.

What is Empty Nest Syndrome?

This can be a heart wrenching time for both parents but especially for the mother. The shock of you being around your child for 18 years and now they have moved out can leave you feeling empty inside.

Although no one has died the same symptoms of grief and heartache are very much felt particularly within a loving family.

This is in every way a new chapter in life, how everyone has to adjust to the new challenges that life has brought you.

The Feeling of Grief.

There is a bag of mixed feelings surrounding the whole situation of what is happening. On one part you have to be happy that they are doing well and thriving, as well as being educated in their chosen field of knowledge. Of course with this double edged sword, you have the negative emotion that just seems to overwhelm the positives especially to begin with.

The feeling of loss and the emptiness in the house at certain times and the things you shared has this could be a time when you no longer have your child’s friends coming around either.

What Can You Do About It…

If you have experienced grief before, then you will recognise the similarity in the emotional feelings. It’s not good to hold onto the negative feelings, as indeed men (fathers) may do. Feeling like an emotional wreck right now, may feel like you’ll never get rid of this.

I think that you should give yourself permission to cry, and parents should be encouraged to express this together if their relationship can do this. This isn’t about a weakness but recognising that you are both feeling the same and this can be your strength. Although one part of the relationship may feel stronger and keep a sense of reality and calmness within the house hold.

Never feel bad about how you feel even though you think that it’s silly as this emotion needs to come out of you so that the healing can take place. It’s okay to avoid the negativity for a while as you don’t want to burst into tears while in the shops.

Your Time To Change.

You have the opportunity to rediscover yourself, but this may be hard as you have probably been at the beck and call for the family for many years. It is important that you have new challenges in your life, this will have to be your calling so to speak as everyone is different and you have to do what feels right.

You don’t have to have a a knee jerk reaction to doing whatever comes along. This could be joining a group with like minded interests. You can even start one of your own. There is an App called ‘meet-up’ as this can also be a way of you getting over your fears of either going out or being allowed to learn how to be you once more.

Anxious Times Ahead!

This can be an understatement of how you feel right now. Once you get over the initial shock and time moves on you will soon realise how time distortion kicks in and before you know it, they are on their way back home and you will be wondering why you felt the way you did.

In the meantime however, as all the new students at Birmingham University and of course the many universities around the country, students are all equally leaving grief stricken parents everywhere. Your kids are possibly feeling the same way, but they have new surrounding and new interests and certainly their new found freedom. So these kids are distracted to say the least, while you are at home crying your eyes out.

This is all natural, but this still leaves you feeling anxious because of wondering if they are okay and not getting into trouble etc…

Also that they are probably having a good time and this is a time when we all have mobiles and can easily stay in touch also with social media. CLAUSTROPHOBIA AND HOW TO OVERCOME IT

The fear of small spaces

lift CLAUSTROPHOBIA SUFFERS IN BIRMINGHAM & WALSALL ANXIETY HYPNOSISClaustrophobia, or to use its common name, the fear of small spaces, is an anxiety related disorder that often brings on panic attacks when an individual finds themselves in an enclosed or confined space such as an elevator, train, aircraft or even a small room. The fear usually stems from the affected individual believing that they cannot escape or “get out” from an enclosed or suffocating situation. Like most other fears or phobias, claustrophobia normally develops due to a previous experience in the sufferers’ earlier life, usually a trauma or life-threatening situation.

Surprisingly for some, claustrophobia can also be experienced in open spaces. This occurs when the sufferer is part of a large crowd or gathering and again, feels that they are unable to escape from the crowd and find their own space once again. This can occur in places such as concerts, or even inside a packed cinema.

Sufferers are normally aware that their fear is irrational, but when faced with a sudden or unexpected situation where they feel they cannot escape, they usually enter a state of panic and the fear overcomes their normal rationality.

Common Symptoms

When an enclosed space situation arises around an affected individual, the following symptoms are common:
Heavy sweating
The fear of physical or actual harm
Shaking of the limbs
Increased heart rate
Dizziness (light – headedness)
Nausea
Difficulty in breathing

Often, when an individual realizes that they suffer from claustrophobia, the symptoms can seem worse and also arise more often. The individual tends to avoid more and more areas where they feel that an enclosed situation may occur and the subsequent anticipation of a panic attack actually increases their anxiety and heightens their fears.

What can I do to overcome and manage my fear of small spaces?

The treatment of claustrophobia is very similar to that of other anxiety related fears and phobias. As claustrophobia is almost always a learned response to an enclosed space situation, it can also be un-learned just as effectively. Lets get this sorted by thinking about your fear in a much more rational way, so when the time comes, being face to face with your worst enemy, you’ll have the confidence to be calm and not let it bother you.

Irrational Thinking.

If you have a real fear of spiders then you don’t need me to tell you how you feel as this was also in my last blog.
The brain working irrationally, hasn’t the power of cognitive thought to be able to deal with this problem, and so this has to be addressed at the conscious cognitive level of rational thinking.
You have to realise that you cannot overcome the fear using irrational thinking to solve your fear of spiders. This has to be done using rational thinking and in the next chapter I will tell you what you have to do.
The only issue is that you have to use your mind to do this. Not simply to just get on and do as the words that I will convey to you, that will have to be processed by your new thinking patterns.

Rational Thinking.

Firstly with rationality what are you actually fearful of? Irrational thinking will just say the ‘spider’ but think more deeply and you’ll start to know what the problem actually is…

All fears will go once you understand them, I will give you an example of when we use the statement ‘I don’t like him’. What is it specifically about that person? Lets face it that we can have a dislike of someone just by the colour of their skin or sexual orientation because of our support of a bias nature.

1. I don’t like their attitude.
2. I don’t like how they talk.
3. I don’t like their style of clothes
4. I don’t like how they smell.
5. I don’t like their politics.
6. I don’t like who they support.

This list could go on, but once you know specifically what your prejudices are you can work to correct them because it is you with the problem, fear, phobia, and dislike.
This attitude will manifest towards many things in your life and that can be a negative, poisonous way to think and live.

Now what is it that you don’t like about a spider?

1. Is it the size?
2. It it their speed?
3. Is it their shape?
4. Is it how they make you feel?
5. Is it because they hide?
6. Is it the eyes?

Again this list could go on, but once you narrow this down you only have to deal with what is your particular issue and not the whole spider.

I Like Spiders.

I like spiders because…

I would like you to write down 30 words of what you would like about a spider. You might even say that you like Spider-Man and so you become your own hero and conquer the fear once and for all.

Once you start to reprogrammed your mind on thinking differently about spiders you will start to eradicate the negativity and so feel more in control with spiders. At this point and this should go without saying, it is important that you don’t kill them as all life is precious, also this would undo the aim of getting you fearless and not to be a killer.

Who do you know is an Arachnophile.

Or spider lover…

You can talk to those who don’t mind spiders and see what they have to say on the subject or start your own research on YouTube etc and get to know as much as you can about spiders.
Realising that you want to change, then for that to happen you have to gain knowledge.
Think of it like this if it helps. … You start a new job in a new place and you don’t know everyone’s name or the order of how things are done and what times events take place or the type of people you’ll be working with.
So you feel anxious, nervous and stressed out. But give it a week or so and you know the route and the dynamics of the style of people you work with and now you don’t feel anxious or stressed out and you are happy to go to work. Well this what will happen once you understand the dynamics of spiders.

What to do next…

living in the UK we don’t get really big spiders especially in the Birmingham area etc.

Well, too often than not, job applicants enter the interview with little or no preparation and simply rely on their resume or personality to get them through the interview. This is fine if you are an individual who is full of confidence, but if you are susceptible to bouts of nervousness or anxiety attacks, a lack of preparation could be crucial. Make sure that you have gone through the interview in your head, over and over again for a few days before the interview. Practice the most common interview questions with a friend or family member and polish your answers. You can even practice in your interview clothing to make it seem even more realistic. Do thins with more than one person and even set up 3 or 4 people playing devils advocate. If you know of someone who does interviewing in their job, you may like them to test you out! Practice makes perfect, so to speak…

Pre-interview relaxation…

In the hours leading up to your interview, try to put yourself in a relaxed mood by doing something that makes you feel comfortable and at ease. This could be inviting a friend over for some green tea and chat, having a soothing massage or even listening to your favorite music in the comfort of your own home. Laughter is also a great relaxant, so stick on a funny movie or comedy show to help disperse your nervous thoughts.

Be open and honest…

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to try to cover up your nervousness or anxiety to your potential employer. This can cause you to lose focus in your interview and concentrate more on hiding your emotions than connecting to the interviewer. Remember, it is perfectly normal to be nervous at a job interview and your potential employer will usually understand that this as part of the interview process. At the beginning of the interview you can say “I apologize, I am feeling a little nervous today” or “It has been a while since I was last in this position, I am a little nervous”. This will put both you and the interviewer at ease from the outset and calm your nerves significantly. An expert interviewer will see past you bluffing confidence.
